Bimetallic Tubes

Alma Tech Srl developed and patented an innovative method for manufacturing bimetallic tubes for heat exchanger assuring an excellent quality level with a competitive price.

Bimetal tubes are a type of tubing made up of two different metals that are bonded together. These tubes are often used in applications where resistance to corrosion is important. The two metals are chosen for their specific properties, with one metal being selected for its corrosion resistance and the other for its strength.

In bimetallic tubes with corrosion resistance, the corrosion-resistant metal is typically on the inside of the tube, where it will be in contact with the fluid or gas being transported. This helps to prevent the material from corroding and weakening over time. Meanwhile, the outer layer of the tube is made from a strong metal that can withstand the pressure and stresses of the application. Anyway it is also possible to manufacture bimetallic tubes with reverse conditions (corrosion-resistant alloy on outside of the tube) and mechanical-resistance alloy on inside).

Types of bimetallic tube

Bimetallic tube is composed of two different materials: usually inner material is a corrosion resistant alloy (copper, copper alloys, aluminium-brass, titanium, stainless steel, carbon steel) whereas the outer material is a high-stress resistant alloy (stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium, copper, copper alloys). It is, however, possible to manufacture bimetallic tubes with any material combination.

Without Ferrules With Ferrules

In applications with high pressures and corrosive conditions, bimetallic tube permits a large economical savings in comparison with a tube made of a single alloy, since the use of precious materials is reduced to the minimum.

Tube-in-tube Safety Tubes (Leakage Detector Tubes)

Applications:

  • Applications with critical cross-contaminations.
  • Drinking Water (heat pumps, heat exchangers, …).
  • Food Process Industry.
  • Electrical Transformers (cooling devices).
  • Chemical/Petrochemical Processes (heat recovery systems).
  • Preventing catastrophic failure of motors or generators (water should leak into cooling air).

How it works:

Heat exchanger, with leakage detector system, consists of 2 bonded concentric tubes, each expanded to a separated tube sheet. Any defect or damage on inner or outer tube will be detected instantaneously (double protection for contamination from tube side or shell side!). Smallest defects are detected thanks to grooves between inner and outer tube. The “leakage gap” is manufactured on outer surface of inner tube and it should be designed on measure for customer (if required). Contact surface between inner and outer tube (for heat transfer) is reached through the top surface of pyramid-shape channel (ask for a specific drawing for more information).

Applications – Bimetallic Tubes

The common application fields are:

  • heat exchangers for power plants (electric, nuclear, thermal and geothermal power plants);
  • high corrosive systems (condensers, evaporators, sea water desalinations, fertilizing, urea systems, ammonia, gas, corrosive acids);
  • chemical and petrochemical industries;
  • food processing and refrigeration industries.
